Out Of Town Patient

I would like one of the doctors at the Texas Institute for Hip and Knee Surgery to perform my surgery but I don't live in Austin.

We can still take care of your orthopedic needs. Simply forward all pertinent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI's), X-rays, medical records, in addition to a summary of your condition to our office. One of our clinical staff will then contact you to discuss further details.

How long should I plan to stay in Austin?

We ask that you arrive 1 or 2 days prior to the surgery to meet with your doctor. If you are planning on having Joint Replacement Surgery expect to stay in the hospital 1-3 days. Before you leave town your doctor will want to assess your surgical site and make sure your pain is being managed a few days after you leave the hospital. Plan on staying anywhere from a few days to 1 week.

What if I need blood work or additional tests performed before surgery?

Your procedure may require pre-operative lab work or a clearance from your Medical doctor or cardiologist. All of this can be done before you come to Austin. When discussing your surgery with our surgery coordinator, please have the phone and fax number to the facility or doctors office where you will have you pre-operative lab work completed if it is required.

When will my doctor want to see me again?

Normally, your doctor would want to see you 1-2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after your surgery. We understand that you might not be able to come into the office during these suggested time frames, please discuss your projected availability with the surgery coordinator. Accommodations can be made for patients who live too far away to travel into the office; x-rays can be sent to our office for review, we can schedule tele-visits, etc.

What if I need pain medication or other prescriptions once I get home?

You can always contact our office for any of your continued needs. We only ask that you provide the complete name, phone number, and fax number of the business you will need us to send your prescriptions to, whether it be medication or physical therapy. One of our clinical staff members will process your request within 48 hours.

Will I need to talk to someone at the hospital?

The hospitals Dr. Dodgin utilizes have patient care coordinators that can help with all aspects of you medical trip. You will be put in touch with them prior to your surgery.
